Kitchen Remodeling – Questions You Should Ask a Contractor

Kitchen Remodeling – Questions You Should Ask a Contractor

You are ready to make your dream kitchen a reality. In order for the project goes smoothly you will want to be sure the remodel stays within budget, that your home will be secure while strangers are working in your house, and that the project will be completed on time.

iRemodel suggests you ask your contractor these important questions before signing a contract for the kitchen renovation.

Questions to Ask:

Do You Submit a Breakdown Of Your Bid or Quote?

You will want a breakdown of costs to be sure the contractor isn’t overcharging for materials or labor. If the contractor gives you an over-all quote for the remodel, ask to have it itemized so you know what you are being charged for and how much it costs.

Does the Bid Include All Costs?

Be sure the contractor doesn’t charge extra for services such as demolition, debris removal, or other work such as painting without notifying you first. In some instances you may be able to do the work yourself to save on cost.

Are You Insured?

You should never hire a contractor that is not insured, licensed, and bonded. This will help ensure that damages caused by the contractor or his employees will be fixed or if the work if not completed properly you have a recourse to recoup the money that has been paid for the work and materials.

Can You Supply References?

It is important to ask contractors for a list of references who can confirm the quality of the contractor’s work especially if the contractor wasn’t referred by a friend or if you are not familiar with their work.

Who Will Perform the Work? And How Will they Secure your Home?

You will want to meet the team of workers who will be in your home during the remodel and know what measures they will take to keep your home secure during the project. This is especially important if you have children or pets or if you will be away while the work is being completed. Once you have hired a contractor ask who will be in charge of making sure your doors are locked when no one is there.

Who Will Supply Materials?

This is an important question to ask. You will want to research the supplier to be sure they are reliable and that they sell quality materials. You will want to be sure the supplier can get the flooring or cabinets you want. You will also want to be sure the supplier provides a warranty and guarantee on the quality of their materials. If you have any concerns check with the Better Business Bureau and ask friends or acquaintances if they have had any experience with the supplier.

What is the Expected Timeline for Project Completion?

You will want the contractor to give you a timeline in which the project will be completed. While your kitchen is being remodeled you will have to make plans for meals during this time, eating out can become tiresome and expensive. You may want to ask the contractor for a discount if the project exceeds the completion deadline.

Do You Guarantee Your Work?

Reliable contractors will guarantee the quality of their work with a written warranty. If your contractor doesn’t offer you a warranty ask for one to protect yourself from shoddy workmanship and/or inferior materials.
