Choosing a Bathroom Vanity

Choosing a Bathroom Vanity

Decisions, there are just so many choices for your bathroom remodel. What kind of tub should I get? Should there be a shower space, where do I put the vanity, what lighting do I need?  So many choices can get very confusing, but creating a dream bathroom comes down to the details and one of those details that can make or break the space is your vanity. Here are some tips for choosing just the right vanity for your space.

So, how do you know which vanity is right for you and your space? Asking yourself these questions to start the planning process will help set you on the right track:

  • Do you need two sinks?
  • What kind of things do you store in your vanity now?
  • What is your style? Do you like a vanity with a closed cupboard and drawers? On the other hand, do you prefer a freestanding pedestal sink?
  • What style of decor do you want for your bathroom? Does your taste go to luxury with a huge Victorian style soaker tub? Alternatively, do you want stark, clean and modern?

Once you have figured out the look you are going for and the style you want you can check out the different types of vanities available.

Freestanding Cabinet Vanities: This is the standard type of vanity unit. It is sturdy almost furniture like. It could have double sinks or a single, these usually have cupboards and drawers built in that come in very handy for storage. They are also quite durable and will stand up to a lot of wear and tear if the family uses the bathroom. Freestanding cabinet vanities are usually quite affordably priced and easy to install in an existing location.

Wall-Mounted Vanities. Are you looking for a sleek, modern minimalist bathroom? Then take a look at some of the new wall-mounted style vanities, these are also called ‘floating vanities’. They are fixed directly to the wall and have an almost custom-made appearance, not to mention they are very easy to clean around and under. A caution here though if this is a family bathroom wall mounted vanities don’t have any support and can be more susceptible to damage from children or adults leaning heavily on them.

Vessel Sinks: There are some incredibly beautiful stone, granite, copper or glass sinks available these days. Set on a furniture style vanity these sinks are very popular. They can be extremely beautiful and very visually appealing. With this type of sink, you also have the storage in the cabinet base and can add a touch of art with the sink you choose. They are also easy to install and require no cutting of the countertop to fit the sink. These are great choices for any style of bathroom but take into consideration what you use the sink for, some of these very stylish vanities are not particularly practical when it comes to mundane things like hand washing.

Custom Bathroom Vanities: You may need a custom-made vanity if your bathroom has an unusual shape or a few angles on the walls. Or perhaps you need a vanity that is specifically functional for your needs. For example, do you need access to the vanity for a wheelchair or disabled person? Perhaps your height determines a shorter vanity. This would be the perfect time to have your vanity designed just for you and a custom vanity allows you to choose from a wide selection of details.

Design Elements: So many choices so many styles, this is why you need to plan exactly what you want right from the very beginning. Wander the aisles of the home store or bathroom display rooms and see what you like. During the planning stage you will be able to collect your choices and narrow down what your needs are. With styles to suit everyone you can make your bathroom your space, your way adding years of enjoyment and value to your home.
